New Method of Recycling Plastics from End-of-Life Vehicles Reduces Carbon Footprint by 75%

The LIFE CIRC-ELV project will enable development of a new business model in the European Union for recycling plastics from end-of-life vehicles.

In accordance with Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life vehicles, reuse and recovery of at least 95% by weight of these vehicles must be reached by 2020. Given that plastic components currently account for around 20% of vehicle weight, recycling and recovering the different plastic materials in vehicles is becoming increasingly important.

End-of-life vehicles are currently handled by authorized treatment facilities, which take care only of the decontamination process. Shredders then select materials of interest, but not all plastics are always recycled.

In order to improve recovery levels, AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, is coordinating the LIFE CIRC-ELV project with the aim of creating a new, technically and economically viable network in Europe where these centres can separate parts such as fuel tanks and bumpers made of high-interest materials, including high-density polyethylene and polypropylene.

Circular Economy Stakeholder Conference last week

Like every year, the conference gathers the European circular economy community around topics of common interest and offers a privileged opportunity to discuss the state of implementation of the Circular Economy Action Plan; in addition, this year’s edition had a strong focus on what could come next in terms of policy options for continuing the transition and the contribution of the circular economy to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. We hope that you found the conference interesting and inspiring and that it met your expectations.

On Day 1, over 600 attendees actively participated in the debates; the conference was also followed extensively via webstream and raised high interactivity on the social media. On Day 2, together with 350 members of the circular economy community, we focused on the exchange of good practices: in implementing circular strategies, in the role consumers play, and how circular cities can contribute to climate mitigation. We also talked about the social dimension of the circular economy, and discussed tools for measuring the transition. And finally, we had lively debates about using creative innovation, circular public procurement and the creation of bio-circular villages.
