German firm Henkel has pledged to ensure its consumer goods products contain at least 35% recycled plastic in Europe by 2025 to promote a circular economy.The company has also expanded its strategic sustainability packaging framework to incorporate additional targets, including making all packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.Aiming to meet consumers’ growing sustainability expectations, Henkel’s new strategic framework helps reflect the three key phases of a circular value chain.

This concept is at the heart of our approach to sustainable packaging.“Together with our partners along the entire value chain, we want to include materials from sustainable sources into smart designs to close the loop, for the benefit of people and the planet.”The new framework involves specific actions, including using more sustainable materials in its product packaging. The commitment to increase the share of sustainable materials relates to Henkel’s use of recycled and renewable materials, including paper and cardboard.Henkel will also work on utilising smart packaging designs to further replace non-recyclable materials in its packaging. The firm will explore innovative solutions along the entire value chain and eliminate unwanted packaging material.Henkel will form partnerships to promote appropriate systems for recycling and explore solutions such as refill systems to encourage consumers to reuse packaging.
