Borealis has collaborated with UK-based sustainable packaging technology company Bockatech to develop low-cost, high-performance foam injection moulding solutions for reusable and recyclable packaging.The objective of the new material and technology partnership is to advance the circular economy.The partners will focus on creating innovative solutions to allow converters to take new opportunities for sustainable food packaging.
Under the terms of an open-innovation agreement, Borealis and Bockatech will accelerate the development of the EcoCore technology to pave the way for licensing it to more manufacturing partners in a variety of markets for multiple applications.In order to meet the growing demand for reusable and recyclable replacement solutions, the companies will combine EcoCore technology with Borealis material grades BH381MO and Daploy WB140HMS to produce lightweight foam injection moulding solutions.The solutions developed under the partnership will be available for customers under licence.According to Borealis, using EcoCore reduces material consumption for foamed mouldings.Foamed mouldings using the technology are expected to have faster cycle times to reduce material costs, energy consumption and environmental impact.“Combining our foam products with EcoCore technology to produce innovative, lightweight solutions is more than an exciting business opportunity: it’s a real step forward for more circularity in packaging.”Borealis New Business Development head Andreas Leitner said: “As strong advocates for the circular economy within our industry, we at Borealis are eager to partner with pioneering firms like Bockatech to develop polyolefins-based solutions that are reusable and recyclable.“Combining our foam products with EcoCore technology to produce innovative, lightweight solutions is more than an exciting business opportunity: it’s a real step forward for more circularity in packaging.”The company also claimed that reusable and recyclable end products developed using EcoCore have high strength and a smooth surface finish ready for printing.The foam core is ultra-lightweight and is said to offer better insulation.Owing to their high strength, the products are suitable for deposit return schemes.
