Wavin collaborated with KWS and Total to launch world’s first PlasticRoad made of recycled plastic in Zwolle, The Netherlands. The PlasticRoad can be built in only a matter of days and that can provide three times longer life than a traditional road.  The modular PlasticRoad is a road that removes concerns about road safety issues due to potholes and road cracks. The road has permeable structure that drains away the excess water quickly and reduces traffic noise and offers a built-in solution for pipes and cables. KWS, a VolkerWessels company, Wavin and Total have worked together on the development of the first PlasticRoad which has now come to reality with the first pilot PlasticRoad – a bicycle path.

The concept of PlasticRoad was first introduced by KWS in 2013, which has now become a reality in the form of a pilot PlasticRoad bicycle path in the Deventerstraatweg in Zwolle. On the surface, PlasticRoad looks like any other bicycle path but it has the recycled plastic construction under the surface.

The PlasticRoad bike path is the first step in the towards building sustainable roads. The future looks bright for PlasticRoad. We look forward to taking the concept to the next level. The PlasticRoad has the great potential as a solution to the challenges of the future, as it pertains to the circular economy.
