Groups call for European Council's support of recycled plastics target / Minimum 35% recyclate in bottles by 2025 / Boost for investments and marine litter preventionA binding 35% recyclate content in drink bottles could boost the recycled plastics market in Europe (Photo: iStock/Alistair Cotton)Industry organisations and NGOs have made a joint statement that requests the European Council (EC) to support minimum recycled content mandates in beverage bottles. Specifically, it urges setting a binding target of at least 35% recycled plastic in beverage bottles by 2025, which was voted on by the European Parliament (EP) on 24 October 2018 ? see Plasteurope.com of 01.11.2018. Considering the EU's proposed single-use plastics directive, the statement describes the target as a "monumental change" and "a vital, and absolutely achievable, step towards circularity."
The groups say the minimum target of 35% recycled plastic in beverage bottles will be key in creating a steady market for recyclates. Furthermore, it will boost both the offer of recyclable plastics and demand of recycled plastics, provide operators with the certainty needed to make investments in recycling technologies and take advantage of China?s plastics waste import restrictions by making Europe the leader in fighting marine litter ? through prevention, proper management, recycling and the use of recyclate in plastic drink bottles.
