Big River Steel expands steel mill and recycling facility to double production capacity

Big River Steel, Osceola, Ark. announces a major expansion of its scrap recycling and steel production facility that will double its hot-rolled steel production capacity to 3.3 million tons annually.  The $1.2 billion investment will also allow production of higher grades of electrical steel to satisfy the increasing demand from hybrid and electric vehicle sales.

Announced less than 18 months after beginning its Flex Mill, a steel mini mill focused on the production of a wide product spectrum, engineering efforts for the expansion are already underway. Major construction activity is to start later this year and last for approximately 24 months.  Big River is also contemplating the installation of a next-generation coating line focused on automotive applications that may involve a steel industry partner.
