Kickstart: Taste the PHA rainbow
Skittles aren't exactly the type of snack you'd normally order for a more sustainable future.
But Skittles maker Mars Wrigley has picked the brand for its U.S. rollout of its home compostable flexible packaging made using Danimer Scientific's Nodax-brand polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) resin.
The packaging is part of a two-year, $1 billion "Sustainable in a Generation" plan to support a "circular economy and to drive progress against its goal of 100 percent reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025."
The PHA project for Mars comes as governments continue to push for bans and taxes, such as a proposal in Colorado, and firms including Grupo Bimbo, the Mexican firm that ranks as the world's largest bakery company, push for compostable and recycled material options.
Mars is testing a range of material solutions in addition to PHA, including paper. Danimer's PHA will be used in both flexible and rigid packaging.
