Sumitomo launches Meguri brand for sustainable resins
Tokyo — Meguri, the Japanese word for circularity, is the name chosen by Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. to introduce its new range of products derived from recycled waste materials and feedstocks.
According to the company, Meguri represents circularity at three levels: a circular economy for resources; circle of people; and circling back to the origin — to Sumitomo Chemical's founding spirit of solving social issues through its business activities.
All three are expressed in the new brand's tagline, Circularity for All.
The Meguri brand comprises a wide range of recycled plastic products, including polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyethylene and polypropylene produced by advanced recycling technologies. The PMMA will be obtained from a pilot facility for chemical recycling, which is to be constructed at the Ehime Works in Japan; the company is developing a facility jointly with Sekisui Chemical to produce PE based on municipal waste. The portfolio will also include PP compounds for automotive parts made from recycled used plastics.
The Maguri brand will continue to grow beyond those materials and Sumitomo says it will build alliances with customers and other companies to help build a circular economy.
With the new brand, Sumitomo Chemical aims to make a contribution towards reducing environmental impact. The company said that "efforts towards a circular economy for plastic resources" are one of the material issues to be addressed as management priorities.
