Shamrock plans new South Carolina location
Wax additives maker Shamrock Technologies Inc., a recycler of fluorinated polymers, is opening a new location in South Carolina.
The $19.4 million investment in Gray Court will manufacture micronized wax, dispersions and emulsions and related products, the state said in revealing the project. Operations are expected to begin in Laurens County in 2023.
"We look forward to developing and launching our new series of green and biobased specialty products in support of the circular economy right here in South Carolina," Shamrock Technologies President Joon Choo said in a statement.
Shamrock, headquartered in Newark, N.J., also has two locations in Henderson, Ky., and one each in Tongeren, Belgium, and Tianjin, China.
"A family-owned company for more than 80 years, Shamrock is a leader in recycling fluorinated polymers to produce application-specific micropowders. The company manufactures a variety of technology-based products, which are processed into high-engineered plastics, grease and lubricants, for use ranging from farm equipment to automotive gears and airplanes," the state said in making the announcement.
William Doyé Neuberg started what would eventually become Shamrock in 1941 when he began a chemical brokerage firm in New York City. Shamrock Chemicals was created in 1951 as a subsidiary of William D. Neuberg Co., initially selling powered waxes, according to the company's website. The company later changed its name to Shamrock when combining three separate subsidiaries in the 1970s.
The company remains family owned after more than 80 years in business.
"Shamrock joins the growing roster of innovative companies in the Palmetto State with a focus on recycling materials into new products," South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said in a statement.
