MOBILISING THE POWER OF VOLUNTARY ACTION TO END PLASTIC POLLUTION
>Last week members of the UK Plastics Pact gathered in London for our 5th Annual Summit. Since we launched the historical Pact in 2018 with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation we have seen progress in the UK act as a catalyst for a global network of Pacts and other voluntary stewardship approaches around the world. A key takeaway from the Summit was that voluntary collaboration across supply chains has accelerated progress, and helped businesses be ahead of the curve when it comes to pending legislative changes around the world.
Hot on the heels of last week’s Summit, we have our Strategic Technical Manager Jayne Paramor and Technical Partnerships Manager Megg Humphrey in Paris for the INC-2 United Nations PlasticsTreaty negotiations, representing WRAP as an Official Observer.
We have a clear message for leaders: the combination of voluntary action alongside regulation is very powerful, and is what we need to see in the final Treaty.
The growing international network of Plastics Pacts and other similar voluntary approaches are driving tangible action and have established a vital foundation from which to inform negotiations around the voluntary elements of the Global Treaty. The final Treaty should utilise these successful voluntary approaches, aligned to policy development which supports and drives action.
We are working with partners around the world to ensure the development and implementation of a robust and impactful Global Treaty to end plastic pollution. One which creates a world where plastic is only used where necessary and, where it is used, never becomes waste.
