Coke launches India's first 100% recycled PET water bottle
Alpla Group and Coca-Cola India are launching a first-ever 100 percent recycled bottle used for food or drinks in that country.
The new container is for the 1-liter size of Kinley brand of bottled water, the global packaging company said.
"Our mission by 2025 is to produce 100 percent recyclable packaging with 25 percent recycled content on average, and this launch is a big step in that direction in India," said Utsav Dixit, head of sustainability at Alpla India, in a statement.
Alpla said 90 percent of the company's current packaging is recyclable.
The new container is available in Andhra Pradesh, a state in the southern coastal region of India.
The soft drink company previously introduced in December 100 percent recycled PET bottles for the Kinley water brand in Bangladesh. Coca-Cola now has 100-percent recycled PET bottles in more than 40 markets.
"We are constantly looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute towards creating a circular economy," said Enrique Ackermann, vice president, technical and innovation, Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, in a statement. "Our new bottles made with food-grade rPET have value beyond their initial use, as they are fully recyclable and can be repurposed into new bottles."
