Monmouth Rubber & Plastics expands to South Carolina

A New Jersey maker of plastic foam and closed-cell sponge rubber is expanding to South Carolina.

Monmouth Rubber & Plastics Corp. of Long Branch, N.J., plans to invest $5.6 million to launch an operation in Williston, S.C., where it will create 65 jobs, according to a May 9 news release from local development officials.

The company is moving into a former Dayco Products LLC plant that made automotive belts until it closed in 2020. The release said Monmouth expects to begin production there by January.

The family-run company was founded in 1964 by John Bonforte Sr., who is now general manager and handles tech support. He began turning over ownership to his son, President John Bonforte Jr., about 10 years ago.

Monmouth makes such well-known brands as Duraflex as well as its recycled rubber and plastics composites material Bondaflex.

A company official did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
